Choosing a College Major

A college major is simply a core subject that a student chooses to specialize in that helps them prepare for specific or varying jobs. This can range from something specific like computer engineering to a more general major like English or biology. Some students who enter college can even be “undeclared” and wait until later in their education to decide.

Each college or university can vary widely in its offerings so it can be potentially important to first understand or decide on your desired major before you choose a school. However, you can always change your major if you change your mind later, but it’s helpful to do some self and career exploration before so you can be confident in your decision. Understanding yourself and choosing a major can take time, and so it is wise to do what you can as early as possible.

Some things to think about before you choose a major might be, special interests or talents, strengths and weaknesses, desired amount of schooling, and desired location of work. We all have many interests and passions. It can be difficult to know what to act on. But by factoring in all of these topics you may be able to refine your choices. For instance, you may love health science but not want to attend school for eight years to become a doctor. You would need to look at science careers that require less education like nursing or healthcare technicians.
